2. Measuring the exact size of sofa cushion covers

If you want to sew your sofa cushion covers (DIY), then in the initial step before purchasing the sofa cushion fabric, you need to measure the required size of your existing sofa cushions. For taking the size of the sofa cushion cover, you can either take this measurement from your existing sofa cushion covers or do this with your sofa cushions after removing the covers. The best recommended option is to take measurements from your cushions because the fabric of old covers may be affected by shrinking or accidental tears. You have to focus on the following elements while measuring the size of sofa cushion covers.

  • Width: Horizontally measure the width of the sofa cushion from one corner to another corner from the front or back side of the cushion.
  • Length: Vertically measure the size of sofa cushion from top to bottom of sofa cushion
  • Depth or thickness: Measure the thickness from the front to the back side of the cushion. You can also cross-check it by measuring horizontally and vertically.

After taking measurements of your sofa cushion covers, you have to purchase the fabric from the market. There are tones of colors and types available in the market like cotton, linen, silk, leather, polyester wool, etc. These types of fabrics vary in durability according to the texture and life of color.

3. Cutting the fabric according to the measurements

To start the cutting process, you can also take ideas from the old cover removed from your sofa cushion. To begin the cutting process, you can cut the first lengths of the cushion covers from top to bottom of the cushion. Otherwise, you may face difficulty adjusting the measurement of the length of the sofa cushion. In the second step, you can cut the width of the cushion covers with the same pattern you have measured the width. While cutting the length and width of the sofa cushion covers for both the front and back sides, you can add an extra margin of 3 to 5 inches to adjust the sewing process.

Similarly, when you are cutting fabric according to the measurement of the thickness of the cover you can also give a margin of extra 1 inch to adjust the accurate fitting of the size. When you are cutting fabric for the zipper to the back of the cushion covers, then you can also spare a margin of 1 inch to attach the zipper perfectly to the cover. It means if the length of the upper or lower side of your sofa cushion is 50 inches, then you can cut it for 53 to 55 inches, and the same process will be repeated with the cutting of the whole sofa cushion cover.

4 . Sewing the sofa cushion cover

The best way to start the sewing process is to sew the zipper between the two lower parts of the sofa cushion covers. It is quite impossible to get the best finish to the edges of the zipper while sewing at the last stage of the whole process. In the next step, you have to prepare the piping strips for your sofa cushion. In this step, you need to cover the piping into the strip length of the fabric fold as half down and then sew the first half of the strip by adjusting the piping cord into the fabric fold.

Similarly, you can sew the remaining half of the strip and other lengths of strips as well. If you have decided to sew the sofa cushion covers without piping strips, then you can ignore the process of sewing the piping strips. This technique can also be followed to make couch cushion covers with elastic. In the third step, you need to sew the side panels with piping strips. Here side panel indicates these parts of the fabric that cover the thickness of the cushions. So, you need to join the edges of lengths of side panels with the edges of the strips on the parallel patterns. Once you match the length of the side panel with the length of the strips, you need a straight stitch. Then, you can repeat the same process for the preparation of the rest of the side panels.

Now, you need to attach the upper and lower pieces of fabric with the side panels. In this process, you need to balance the lengths of side panels with the upper and lower pieces and make straight stitches to attach them. If you have to make a round corner for your sofa cushion cover, then you need to make incisions of 0.5 inch near the perimeter of the curves of the corner to avoid pulling to the fabric. But if you have to make a square corner, then you need to give a diagonal cut of 0.5 inches to give a margin of fitting to the corner of the fabric. Now, you need to assemble every piece of the fabric by pinning their edges in the right length and direction. As a last step, you turn the right way out when you have completed sewing the sofa cushion cover.
